What is Real?

What Reality Will You Choose To Empower?

There’s an old story: Some travelers walk a dusty path at dusk. In the fading light, one of them sees something stretched across the ground…a snake! His heart racing, his breath quickens, and fear takes him over. But when another traveler looks closer, it’s revealed to be nothing more than a stick.

The lesson is clear: our beliefs and perceptions shape our reality. To the first traveler, the snake was real. To the second, it was just a stick.

But here’s the twist…what if it was a snake?

The body’s fear response would have been accurate and life-protecting. The belief of danger would have matched the physical reality. And that’s the point: both possibilities are real until one is revealed. Our mind, our senses, and our beliefs all collaborate to determine what is true for us in the moment.

This story reminds us of two things:

Sometimes our fears are illusions, created by shadows and imagination.

Other times, our fears are signals, alerting us to real danger that requires action.

Either way, our response is real. Our body reacts. Our choices matter. What we decide to believe in that split second has consequences.

The deeper question isn’t whether it’s a stick or a snake…it’s: How do we choose to engage with the unknown? With fear? With possibility?

Reality is not only what happens to us. Reality is also what we bring to the moment; our awareness, our courage, and our willingness to see clearly.

This week, I invite you to notice where you might be seeing “snakes” that are really sticks, and also honor the moments when your inner wisdom alerts you to something that truly needs your attention. In both cases, you are the creator of your experience. The question is: what reality will you choose to empower?
